a television system or display format that provides a moderate resolution and quality of video and audio compared to lower-quality formats like LDTV or higher-quality formats like HDTV
SDTV, short for Standard-Definition Television, is a type of television that offers a lower resolution compared to high-definition (HD) and ultra-high-definition (UHD) TVs. It typically has a resolution of 480p in North America or 576p in Europe, meaning the image is less sharp and detailed than what is found in HD or UHD TVs. SDTV was the standard for television broadcasts before HD became common, and it is still used for some broadcast channels and older TV models. While it provides an acceptable viewing experience, it does not offer the clarity and detail that newer, higher-resolution televisions do.
- Most channels used to broadcast in SDTV before HD became the standard.
- SDTV works fine for basic cable, but if you want crisp images, you'll need to upgrade to an HD TV.
- The signal from the antenna is in SDTV, so the picture looks fuzzy compared to streaming in HD.
- The old TV in the living room only supports SDTV, so the picture quality isn't as clear as the newer HD models.
